Itinerary through the city in 2 days
The best way to start visiting the city is by visiting the historic quarter, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1955, and which, together with Oviedo, are the most important and best preserved in the Principality of Asturias. A stroll through its streets is a journey through history since the Middle Ages. You will find buildings, palaces and charming squares that share a common element: the portico. Right here, in the Old Town, and located in the oldest street of the city, (Calle La Ferrería) we find the Museum of Urban History, an essential place to understand the development of the "Villa del Adelantado".
Next, we will go to the Plaza del Mercado (Plaza de los Hermanos Orbón), a place where a weekly market is held every Monday, dating from the 15th century, when the Catholic Monarchs granted the town of Avilés the privilege of holding a free market, so that it could recover from a disastrous fire that devastated the city in 1478. The square, which is also colonnaded, has a fixed central element, where the food market is located, and in the surrounding area and the neighbouring Sabugo neighbourhood we will find different places where we can enjoy an aperitif and tapas to regain our strength. In the afternoon we can stroll through the most commercial streets of the city, where the traditional shops coexist with the most innovative shops, fashion boutiques, jewellers, decoration shops... a real treat for the eyes in an "open shopping centre".
The best way to round off the first day in Avilés would be to enjoy one of the many cultural activities on offer at the Palacio Valdés Theatre or the Niemeyer Centre.
We will start the second day with a visit to the Cemetery of La Carriona (CICLAC), built in the 19th century, which is a real open-air museum of funerary art. Its architect was Ricardo Marcos Bausá and it is of great historical-artistic relevance, which is why it is part of the ASCE (Association of Significant Cementeries in Europe), as well as leading the EUCEMET project, which stands for "European Cemeteries: Gardens of Souls, Diversity and Heritage". We will then travel to the neighbouring municipality of Castrillón, without leaving the Avilés region, where we will visit the coastal area and the Paseo de la Playa de Salinas, one of the longest beaches in the Principality, at the end of which we will find the Open Air Anchor Museum, dedicated to Philippe Cousteau. Since the 1970s, when Salinas established itself as a summer resort and second home, it has been growing in recent times as an essential place for surfing, hosting various festivals and competitions of great importance both nationally and internationally. After this visit, we will return to the centre of Avilés to go to the most famous street of the city: Galiana, one of the most popular and busiest of the town, where, as well as in the upper part, in the area of the Plaza del Carbayedo, we will find many gastronomic establishments where we can have lunch.
In the afternoon, we will go to the most important cultural centre of the city, the Niemeyer Centre, the only work in our country by the famous Brazilian architect, Óscar Niemeyer. Inaugurated in 2011, it allows you to discover all its spaces and its history through the guided tours it offers. It is one of the cultural references and tourist attractions of the Principality as well as a symbol of the transformation of Avilés. It has its own collection of various works and also offers travelling exhibitions throughout the year. After this visit, we will go to the Portus Space, an interpretation centre belonging to the Port Authority, where we can learn about the history and heritage of the Port of Avilés throughout the centuries.
We will finish the day enjoying the sunset from the Avilés Lighthouse, a privileged viewpoint of the city and its coast.
